Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from the family, and so she was taken care of by her mother, grandparents and godparents. In her childhood Ford was afflicted with anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford began acting during her teen years and joined an actor in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she didn't fit in. Ford decided to apply instead to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered the position she wanted on her third attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut when she appeared in Surgical Spirit in an episode in the year 1991. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Alongside her usual stage work, Tate was a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate was recognized for her comedy stand-up that was added to her portfolio in 1996.
